On June 11–12, the international seminar “Citizenship Education and the Future of Multicultural Democracies” was held at the Faculty of Educational Studies, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. The event was organized by the School Pedagogy Lab, the Department of Sociology of Education, and the Policy and Civic Education Laboratory.
The seminar offered two days filled with intensive, inspiring presentations and meaningful discussions on the challenges facing citizenship education in the context of increasing socio-cultural diversity.
The event was officially opened by Professor Zbyszko Melosik, Vice-Rector of AMU, who emphasized the importance of civic education in light of dynamic social changes. A warm welcome was also extended to the guests by Professor Sylwia Jaskulska, Vice-Dean for International Cooperation at the Faculty.
On the first day, participants had the opportunity to listen to scholars from Poland, Germany, Croatia, the Netherlands, and the United States, who addressed topics such as:
– youth civic participation
– the threats of extremism
– the role of cultural memory
– democratic values
– the evolution of curricula
– challenges in teacher education
These diverse contributions came together to form a multidimensional narrative on civic education as a foundation for the future of democracy.
The second day featured interactive workshops for students from Poland and Katholische Universität Eichstätt-Ingolstadt, led by Professor Bartosz Hordecki and Dr. Joanna Jarmużek. The meetings focused on practical and participatory approaches – students discussed the role of youth in civic life and presented their own projects and reflections on civic education and forms of social engagement.
To conclude the seminar, students had the opportunity to explore the city of Poznań, discovering its rich history and multicultural heritage.
We extend our sincere thanks to all participants for their engagement and for the truly inspiring atmosphere throughout the two-day event.
